If you are new to this area and wondering about the pros and cons of the various approaches, here is a brief summary of the acronyms and terminology:

• Energy Management System and Power Monitoring System (PMS) – these two are almost the synonymous, both working to meet challenges in critical power and cost sensitive environments. A good, integrated PMS or EMS analyses and identifies power issues before they become critical. It’s all about maximising reliability and avoiding problems.
• EnMS still means Energy Management System but it is associated with the industry standard, ISO 5001:2018. This is the International Organization for Standardization’s framework for organisations – both large and small – to manage and reduce their energy use and costs. In this context, your EMS is very much part of meeting your EnMS requirements.
• Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems work in a broad range of environments to monitor and (if required) control the electrical distribution ​network within a building or campus​. Control is usually dynamic with the system reacting to monitored status and ​data with pre-defined logic scenarios​.

Monitoring, measuring, metering and managing are all used in this field too – and there are subtle but vital differences. EMS and PMS equipment and software monitors your system and takes measurements or meter readings. This data could be reported in a range of formats but, increasingly, critical power supply packages include management systems that take that data, analyse it and not only use it to create useful reports but also to adapt and act.
